Tireotropic hormone, TSH

TSH (basal tireostimulator hormone or thyrotropin) is a glycoprotein synthesized by adenohypophysis. TSH stimulates the production and secretion of metabolic thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), by interacting with a specific receptor on the surface of thyroid cells. TSH’s synthesis and secretion is stimulated by TrH, a hypothalamic hormone, in response to low levels of circulating thyroid hormones. Increased levels of T4 and T3 inhibit TSH production through a negative feed-back mechanism. The failure of the adjustment at any level of the hypothalamo-hypophizo-thyroid axis will result in either the underproduction (hypothyroidism) or hyperproduction (hyperthyroidism) and/or T3.
